the scorched earth
the scorched earth is Dora E. McQuaid's collection of poems about her journey from victimization to survivorship, through healing from both sexual and domestic violence into empowerment as an activist, speaker and performer. Dora states that writing "saved" her, and this chapbook offers the opportunity to join her in that process.
The compact disc companion to this chapbook, the scorched earth: spoken, which was released after people told Dora that they wished they could "replay" her actual readings, has studio and live recordings of Dora performing 16 of the 28 poems from the book, plus a bonus track of "Around This Table," which commemorates the PA Coalition Against Domestic Violence's 25th anniversary.
Often called "intense," "unflinchingly honest," and "inspirational." Dora's writing and performances have offered art to activism to many events and organizations around the United States, and her poems are used by statewide and national programs and organizations.
